There's a particular hum in the air at the market this time of year — and this Sunday, we're celebrating exactly where it comes from. June 28 is Pollinator Day at Market in the Valley, a morning dedicated to the bees, butterflies, and beneficial bugs that make so much of what fills our tables possible.
Stop by and say hello to the Master Gardeners and the Golden Valley Garden Club, who'll be set up with two tents full of know-how. Whether you're curious about which native plants the bees love, how to turn a corner of your yard into a pollinator haven, or just want to chat with people who light up talking about gardens, they'd love to meet you.
It's easy to forget how much of a market morning depends on pollinators. The strawberries, the squash blossoms, the apples coming later in the season, the flowers our growers bring by the bucketful — so many of them start with a bee doing quiet, essential work. Celebrating them is really just celebrating the people who grow our food, too.
And the good news is that helping pollinators is simple. Plant a few native flowers. Let part of the lawn bloom before you mow. Skip the pesticides when you can. Leave out a shallow dish of water on hot days. Small things, added up across a neighborhood, make a real difference.
Of course, it's still a market morning, which means everything you come for will be here: just-picked produce, fresh bread and pastries, handmade goods, and ready-to-eat treats. Roll out your mat for free yoga at 9:30 am, settle in for live music, and take your time wandering the stalls.
